CLINICAL STUDY FINDS NMN SUPPLEMENTATION SUPPORTED BIOLOGICAL AGE WHILE IMPROVING PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE
One reason scientists are interested in NMN is its relationship with NAD+, an important molecule used throughout the body. Human studies have reported lower NAD+ in several tissues as people get older.
This is a schematic illustration, not a measured age-by-age curve. Human NAD+ findings vary by tissue, population and measurement method.
Human brain
Human studies cited in a major review have reported roughly 10% to 25% lower NAD+ between younger adulthood and older age.
Human liver
In one small human study, liver NAD+ in patients over 60 was approximately 70% of the level measured in patients under 45.
Human skeletal muscle
Human research has also reported lower muscle NAD+ concentrations in older adults compared with younger adults.
NMN is an NAD+ precursor. In simple terms, NMN is one of the molecules your body can use in the natural pathway that makes NAD+. This relationship is one of the reasons scientists are studying NMN in the context of ageing.
Human NAD+ research is still developing and results are not identical across every tissue or study. Sources: Age-related NAD+ decline review and Nature Aging human muscle study .
So what is NMN, and how is it connected to NAD+?
The easiest way to understand NMN is to think about what is happening inside your cells.
Your body is made of cells
Your muscles, brain, heart, skin and the rest of your body are all made from tiny building blocks called cells.
NMN is a building material
NMN is a molecule your body can use as one of the building materials for making another important molecule called NAD+.
Your body makes NAD+
Your cells use NMN in the natural biological pathways that produce NAD+.
NAD+ helps cells do their jobs
NAD+ is a helper molecule used in many normal cell reactions, including reactions involved in getting usable energy from the food you eat.
NMN is one of the molecules your body can use to make NAD+. NAD+ then takes part in many important chemical reactions inside your cells.
NMN is also not a stimulant like caffeine. NAD+ is a helper molecule involved in normal metabolism, including the processes your cells use to release usable energy from nutrients.
Approximate increase in mean six-minute walking distance from baseline in the study's 900mg NMN group after 60 days.
Researchers have now studied NMN in humans.
In a published randomised, multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers followed 80 healthy adults aged 40 to 65 for 60 days.
- 80 healthy middle-aged adults participated
- Participants received placebo, 300mg, 600mg or 900mg NMN daily
- The trial lasted 60 days
- Researchers measured blood NAD concentration, physical performance and estimated blood biological age
- Six-minute walking distance increased in the NMN groups relative to placebo
We share the study because we believe people considering NMN should be able to see the published human research behind the ingredient.
Read the published research →In the NMN groups, estimated blood biological age didn't significantly increase.
Researchers also used blood-test data to estimate each participant's biological age at the beginning and end of the trial.
Across the 300mg, 600mg and 900mg NMN groups, estimated blood biological age did not change significantly from baseline to day 60.
In the placebo group, estimated blood biological age increased significantly between baseline and day 60.
It is not someone's actual birthday age and it does not mean that NMN made participants younger. In this study, researchers used the Aging.Ai 3.0 calculator to estimate biological age from 19 routine laboratory blood measurements. The change observed in each of the three NMN groups was statistically different from the change seen in the placebo group.
Blood biological age was a secondary outcome of the study. It was measured at baseline and day 60 using the Aging.Ai 3.0 calculator. This finding should not be interpreted as evidence that NMN reverses ageing or reduces a person's chronological age. The study investigated AbinoNutra™ NMN, not Charava NMN.

The study investigated AbinoNutra™ NMN at doses of 300mg, 600mg and 900mg per day. It did not investigate Charava NMN. Charava was not involved in commissioning or conducting the research.
Blood biological age was estimated using the Aging.Ai 3.0 calculator based on 19 clinical laboratory parameters. The measure is an estimated research outcome and should not be interpreted as a participant's chronological age.
The clinical trial was funded by Aba Chemicals Co. and Abinopharm, Inc., the companies involved in development of the investigational NMN product. View the full published study.
